Katich is a player whose potential far outweighed his input on the national landscape, as Australia’s devotion to the next generation ending the Test career at 56 matches. The left-handed opening batsman has personified his playing style by readying outside leg, before centring with a step across the stumps as the bowler approaches. It was a method that had Katich build a respectable average of more than 45 at Test level and one that has had him remain at the top of his game, with innings of 200 and 115 in consecutive first-class matches for county side Lancashire in July. Katich’s place among West Australian cricket is one of high respect and his role as captain of the Perth Scorchers is fitting, with his experience and leadership second to none. The 37-year-old was a valued member of the side that reached the BBL final in the second season with an average of more than 27 runs and a high score of 66 against the Hobart Hurricanes on New Years Day.
