Preview: Match 10 - Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

CSK hold edge in all-IPL clash

Match 10 of the Karbonn Smart CLT20 2013 will be an all-Indian affair. The Chennai Super Kings will take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad in this all-important fixture, which will see the winner climb to the top of Group B standings.

Both teams will be brimming with confidence, having registered wins in their previous matches. CSK chased down 186 to defeat the Titans by four wickets on Sunday. The Sunrisers registered a similar result too, chasing down 161 against Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday.

The Protagonists

Look no further than the two left-handers who bat in the top order for the Chennai Super Kings. Almost every time Michael Hussey scores runs, it results in a victory for his team. Suresh Raina is the other important cog in the CSK batting unit; a consistent run-getter for the team – and one who can step on the accelerator seamlessly – the 26-year-old was in punishing mood in the match against the Titans. Both batsmen will be expected to carry their form into this match. One of the reasons for CSK being such a successful team is because of the depth they have in all departments. In skipper MS Dhoni and Albie Morkel the team has two of the most feared batsmen in the death overs.

On the bowling front, Dwayne Bravo has turned to be a surprise weapon for the team. The Trinidadian was the top wicket-taker in IPL 2013, and he did fairly well with his variety in the previous match. He will be expected to get among the wickets again, as will R Ashwin and Mohit Sharma who have been contributors to CSK’s success in recent times.

Like their opponents, the Sunrisers too have a few dangerous left-handers in their line-up. If it was skipper Shikhar Dhawan who led from the front in the Qualifiers, it was Thisara Perera who did the damage in the team’s previous match. The other two left-handers in the Sunrisers line-up – Parthiv Patel and JP Duminy – will be expected to accumulate the runs, allowing Dhawan and Perera to play their shots.

On the bowling front, Dale Steyn will be hurting from a poor outing against Trinidad & Tobago. The South African conceded 41 runs in his four overs in the previous match, and he will be keen to stamp his authority on a formidable CSK line-up.

Previous Meetings

The Chennai Super Kings have a 2-0 advantage against the Sunrisers Hyerabad. The two teams met on two occasions in the league stages of IPL 2013, and it was CSK who emerged triumphant on both occasions.

In the first meeting at Chennai, MS Dhoni and co. chased down 160 to win by five wickets. In the return fixture, CSK – powered by Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 99 – posted 223 runs and then restricted the hosts to 146, to win by 77 runs.

Ishant Sharma has a very modest record against the Chennai Super Kings. In six matches against them, he has picked up just two wickets and has conceded 10.52 runs per over.

What Next

Both teams will be seen in action next on September 28. While the Sunrisers will clash with the Titans in the 4 pm fixture, CSK will square off against KFC Big Bash League winners Brisbane Heat later that evening.
