Preview: Match 11 – Mumbai Indians vs Yorkshire

Defending champs take on wounded Yorkshire

Defending champions Mumbai Indians clash with Yorkshire in Match 11 of the Karbonn CLT20 2012.

Both teams are in search of their first wins in the tournament. After winning both their matches in the Qualifying event, Yorkshire received a mauling at the hands of the Sydney Sixers in their first match in the tournament’s main event. The Mumbai Indians meanwhile went down in their opening match against the Highveld Lions.

Newlands Stadium, Cape Town

The Protagonists

Sachin Tendulkar will be the key batsmen in the Mumbai Indians line-up. Though the team has numerous stroke-makers, they need someone to bat through the innings. The 39-year-old played that role to perfection in the IPL, and in bowler-friendly conditions in South Africa, it is important that an experienced player bats through the innings and allows stroke-makers, like Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Smith, to flourish at the other end.

Rohit Sharma has been touted as a special talent for some time now; he comes across as someone who sees the ball early and has loads of time. However, despite all the talent at his disposal, consistency has been the one area he has been lacking and the Mumbai Indians will be hoping the 25-year-old can hit a purple patch soon.

With Yorkshire missing the services of David Miller – who won them the match against Uva Next – the team will look up to Phil Jaques, Gary Ballance and Adil Rashid to score the bulk of the runs. The team lacks stars in the bowling department, and hence it is important that every individual who gets to bowl comes good.

Previous Meetings

This match will be the first time these two teams will be meeting in a Twenty20 match.

Yorkshire’s 96 for 9 in the previous match against the Sydney Sixers was their lowest total batting first in T20 matches.

What next?

Both teams will fly over to Johannesburg for their next fixture. While Yorkshire take on the Highveld Lions in the afternoon match on October 20, the Mumbai Indians will take on the Chennai Super Kings in an all-IPL clash later in the evening.
