Winning first match boosted confidence: Chand
Daredevils batsman hopes his team can carry forward their momentum
Having gotten off to a winning start, the Delhi Daredevils are looking to carry the momentum into the rest of the tournament. One of the four teams from the Indian Premier League to qualify for the CLT20 2012, they hit the nets hard late in the afternoon here today. They will be taking on the Auckland Aces on October 19 at the Sahara Stadium Kingsmead here.
Speaking to the media prior to the practice session, Unmukt Chand, who played a superb knock against the Kolkata Knight Riders in their first match, said, “Definitely it is good to start off with a win. It always gives a good momentum going ahead. Winning the first match has really helped us boost our confidence. The team has done really well. We got a good 52-run victory in the first match; so everyone is good spirits.”
“As far as I am concerned, I am really happy and a bit confident of my batting. I scored a few runs and I am happy with the way I am batting. I hope I can carry on the same performance in the next match as well,” he added.
Speaking about the preparations with some of the players coming into the tournament after playing the ICC World Twenty20, he mentioned, “Having played the ICC World Twenty20 is a good thing because the guys will be playing a lot of T20 matches. They have come from the tournament straight away, so they are mentally prepared to play Twenty20s.”
Chand, who has been in sublime touch in the past few months, said that he is happy to be playing in South Africa. “It is definitely a good experience. It is one of the best places to play cricket in.”
“It is has been good. The wickets are good. They are nice, bouncy wickets unlike India. But it is good that I have played quite a bit outside India. The conditions have been really helpful and are quite supportive for playing good cricket,” he added.
Speaking about what it means for a youngster to be playing in this tournament, he said, “Twenty20 is a nice format and it helps a cricketer learn. With so much cricket being played, it is really important to do well in all three formats.”
Chand, who took on some of the best international bowlers like Jacques Kallis and Brett Lee during his brilliant knock against KKR, added, “I think CLT20 is one of the best platforms for us youngsters because we get to share dressing rooms with many big players. It is a great learning experience. It adds to the confidence and you get to play against international bowlers and that is a real bonus for us. Definitely, it will help us in every form of cricket.”
“It feels great to be with senior and international players and share the dressing room with them. To be around them feels really good and it is one of the best experiences that we can get. We wouldn’t have been able to get that if IPL and ClT20 weren’t there, and we wouldn’t have been there.”
“The journey has been good really till now. Spending two years with the Delhi Daredevils has really helped and coming to South Africa feels really good,” he concluded.
