Preview: Match 3 – Chennai Super Kings vs Sydney Sixers
Will Dhoni and co be able to halt Shane Watson?
Sydney Sixers, the winners of the Big Bash League, square off against the Chennai Super Kings in Match 3 of the Karbonn CLT20 2012.
The Chennai Super Kings rank among the most consistent T20 teams in the world; they’ve featured in four of five IPL finals and have made it to final of the CLT20 once in three appearances. MS Dhoni’s team will be keen to make a mark in the alien conditions they are likely to encounter in South Africa, while the Sydney Sixers will be hoping they can unsettle their Asian opponents by making the most of the home-like pitches they are likely to play on.
Sunday, October 14, 2012, 1:30 p.m. (5:00 p.m. IST)
New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
Suresh Raina and Ravichandran Ashwin are among the players who’ve had the most influence on the Chennai Super Kings’ fortunes in recent years. Raina is CSK’s most capped player and their leading run-getter, and most of the times he has fired with the bat, the team has gone on to win. The 25-year-old relishes the 20-over format, which gives him the license to play his shots from the outset. He is more than just a good striker of the cricket ball; a busy cricketer who is always on the lookout for extra runs, Raina is also an electric fielder anywhere in the field and is a very useful off-break bowler.
The Sydney Sixers will look up to the two stars of Australia’s campaign in the 2012 ICC World T20. Shane Watson was named the Player of the Tournament in Sri Lanka; at one point, he topped most statistical charts in that tournament. And given that kind of form, it is only obvious that he will be the most influential player in the team.
Mitchell Starc too was impressive with the ball in Sri Lanka. He bowled quick, generated good bounce and used his angles well to finish the tournament as Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker – behind Watson. On the hard and bouncy tracks in South Africa, he is sure to be more than a handful if he carries that form into CLT20 2012.
This match will be the first time these two teams will be meeting in a Twenty20 match.
Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni has been captain in 126 T20 matches – the most by any individual.
Chennai Super Kings’ Albie Morkel is the most capped T20 player; he has appeared in 202 T20 matches.
Sydney Sixers’ Shane Watson was named the Player of the Tournament in the recently concluded ICC World Twenty20.
Both teams will travel to the picturesque Newlands Stadium in Cape Town for their next games. On October 16, the Sydney Sixers will compete against Yorkshire in the afternoon match, while the Chennai Super Kings will square off against the Highveld Lions later the same evening.
