Jayawardene to lead DD in CLT20

Sehwag steps down from captaincy to focus on his batting

The Delhi Daredevils will be led by Mahela Jayawardene in the forthcoming Champions League Twenty20, 2012 in South Africa. According to the franchise’s official website, current captain Virender Sehwag requested to be relieved from captaincy to concentrate on his batting.

The Daredevils team mentor TA Sekar was quoted on the official website as saying, “Viru told us a few months ago that he wanted to bat freely and suggested that we make Mahela the captain of the side.”

This will be a second CLT20 appearance for the Daredevils after they qualified for the inaugural season of the tournament. Back then too, Sehwag had stepped down from the captaincy and it was Gautam Gambhir who led the team in CLT20 2009.

Jayawardene has led the Kings XI Punjab and the now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the IPL before. He also led the Daredevils in IPL 2012 in the games that Sehwag sat out.
