Preview: Match 19 – Perth Scorchers vs Auckland Aces

Will Scorchers spoil Aces’ party?

The penultimate Group fixture in the Karbonn CLT20 2012 will feature the Perth Scorchers and the Auckland Aces.

With just two points in their kitty, the Perth Scorchers are out of contention for a place in the semi-finals. The Auckland Aces are still in with a chance of progressing to the next stage; they need to win and then wait for result from the Delhi Daredevils' match against the Titans to know if they will be among the last four teams standing.

The pressure will be on the Auckland Aces for sure. Historically, teams have shown they can be very dangerous opponents when they have nothing at stake and come out and enjoy themselves. The Aces will have to overcome the threat of the Perth Scorchers who've got nothing but pride to play for. Secondly, there’s the big semi-final place at stake, and the Aces will be keen to do everything in their power to confirm their progression to the knockouts.

Centurion Park, Centurion

The Protagonists

Azhar Mahmood tops the batting and bowling charts for the Auckland Aces and it just goes to explain the kind of form he has been in. However, the former Pakistan all-rounder had a disappointing game against the Titans and he will want to make a significant contribution in this all-important game. The team would also look for big runs from the opening pair of Lou Vincent and Martin Guptill, and for wickets from the experienced Kyle Mills.

After playing a match-winning innings in the warm-up match against the Mumbai Indians, Herschelle Gibbs has only managed 25 runs in the next three innings in the tournament. Given his reputation, the team will be expecting a lot more from him. The left-hand pair of Simon Katich and Shaun Marsh is important to the Scorchers’ batting plans; though both batsmen have scored runs, they have struggled for momentum and will be keen to finish the tournament with a flourish.

Previous Meetings

This match will be the first time these two teams will be meeting in a Twenty20 match.

Nine of the last 10 T20 matches at the Centurion Park have been won by the team chasing; the one other match ended in a tie.

The average first innings score in T20 matches at the Centurion Park is 154.

In eight T20 innings at the Centurion Park, Herschelle Gibbs has been dismissed for a duck on four occasions. In the remaining four innings, he’s managed scores of 60, 48, 20 and 5.

What next?

The Perth Scorchers are out of contention for making it to the semi-finals and will pack their bags and head home after this fixture. If they win this fixture and if the Delhi Daredevils beat the Titans, the Auckland Aces will sail through to the semi-finals. Else, the New Zealand club will have to pack their bags and head home.
