Preview: Match 13 – Highveld Lions vs Yorkshire
Yorkshire need a win to stay afloat
Match 13 of the Karbonn CLT20 2012 features a clash between the Highveld Lions and Yorkshire.
The Lions have two wins from three matches and need one more win to be certain of progressing to the semi-finals. They defeated the two Indian teams in the group – Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – before they received a sound thrashing at the hands of the Sydney Sixers.
Yorkshire, who won both their games in the Qualifying Stage, came unstuck in their match against the Sydney Sixers, before rain interrupted their game against the Mumbai Indians. With just two points from two matches, and with two teams already ahead of them in the standings, the Yorkshire boys will know they have to win both their remaining matches to progress to the knock-out stages.

Though the spotlight has been on the teenager Quinton de Kock, captain Alviro Petersen and the experienced Neil McKenzie to begin with, one lad has emerged as an impressive batsman in the Lions’ last two outings. The left-handed Gulam Bodi has scored half-centuries in the Lions’ last two matches; not only has he scored the runs, but he has got them in style. Unusual for a left-hander, but the 33-year-old is a very fluent player through the leg side and can pack some power in his strokes if he chooses to go through the off side.
In terms of both experience and match-winning ability, Dirk Nannes and Sohail Tanvir stand right on top as the Lions’ best bowlers. However, the left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso has silently emerged as the best bowler in his team; he was outstanding in the two matches against the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, and then demolished the Sydney Sixers’ top order.
Yorkshire, who are missing the services of David Miller, need Phil Jaques to fire at the top of the innings, and need contributions from Gary Balance and Adil Rashid, who were impressive in the Qualifiers. On the bowling front, they will need early breakthroughs from the experienced Ryan Sidebottom, and hope the others can keep up the pressure.
This match will be the first time these two teams will be meeting in a Twenty20 match.
The Highveld Lions have an impressive record in run-chases at the New Wanderers Stadium; they’ve won 10 of their 12 run-chases at the venue.
This is the Highveld Lions’ last group game of CLT20 2012; they will have to wait and see if they progress to the semi-finals. Yorkshire meanwhile take on the Chennai Super Kings in their last group game on October 22.
