Wanted to win for pride: Karthik

MI ‘keeper-batsman says CSK game was important for his side

The Mumbai Indians lost to the Chennai Super kings by just six runs at the Wanderers. The clash between the defending champions and the former champions went down to the wire as Dinesh Karthik and Kieron Pollard took the attack to the CSK bowlers. The MI wicketkeeper led the chase with a feisty 74-run knock to keep his team in the hunt till the last over. He hit the CSK bowlers all over the park and out of it during his 45-ball blitzkrieg and cleared the ropes six times and slammed four boundaries before being bowled in the pen-ultimate over of the game.

While speaking to clt20.com, the wicketkeeper-batsman spoke about his entertaining knock and MI’s campaign.

Excerpts from his brief chat:

On his superb innings

Definitely it felt very good. It was important for both the teams, and both wanted to win out of pride. Both play in the IPL, so we got a fight going on. It was good to play an important game and a game that had a close finish.

On the wicket

The wicket was seaming a bit. It was tough to play shots off the fast bowlers, but things came out well for me; so I am happy with the way it went.

On staying motivated for a match with no semi-finals implications

We are two IPL teams and we have a history of competing against each other so it was important for us to do the best that we can. At the end of the day it was a very good game and we play for the crowds and I am sure that they had a good game and a close game to watch. This is great for CLT20, it just the fact that close games happen.

On whether MI conceded a few runs too many

At the start they played some good shots. We pulled back really well. We bowled well in the second half. But even in the powerplay they bowled very well. They won important phases of the game, which we couldn’t hold on to.

On adapting to the conditions

Adapting to the conditions wasn’t an issue for us because we came a week before the tournament started and we got ourselves well equipped to play this tournament. And I am happy with the way it went.

On ‘keeping wicket in South Africa

It was pretty good wicket and something a ‘keeper will enjoy. For the fast bowlers there was a lot of bounce; the ball comes into your hands and it is really good to ‘keep here.

On the last match against the Sydney Sixers

They are the best team. I am not sure of the combination or who will play but whatever it is we come out and try and put up the best side that we can.
